Carter’s eyes widened as he stared down at the folder, which was now on his desk. ‘As in planted?’

‘Potentially yes,’ said Phillips. ‘And I’m afraid it gets worse.’

‘Why doesn’t that surprise me?’

‘The sample in question – essentially the nail in the coffin for Pearson – was found six days after the fire, by a junior forensic scientist and the SIO leading the investigation.’

Carter closed his eyes for a moment before sighing as he opened them again. ‘And let me guess, the SIO was Fox?’

‘Yes, sir.’

‘Oh shit,’ he muttered. ‘Shit. Shit. Shit.’

‘I really think it’s time to take a proper look at the Pearson case, sir.’

Carter held her gaze for a few seconds before passing across a clear evidence bag. ‘This arrived about an hour ago in the post. I bagged it as soon as I realised what it was.’

Phillips turned the bag round in her hands as she examined the contents.

Carter continued, ‘It’s another note from our guy, plus a printout of a newspaper story from the day Pearson was convicted.’

‘Pearson is innocent.’ Phillips began reading the note aloud. ‘He was set up by senior cops now hiding in plain sight, and I intend to prove it. You haven’t heard the last from me. The Real Firestarter.’ Next, she read the headline out loud. ‘Cop Killer Firestarter Jailed for Life.’

‘Thankfully there was no video this time round,’ added Carter.

‘So what do we do, sir?’ Phillips asked as she handed the bag to Jones so he could take a closer look for himself.

The room fell silent as Carter scanned the forensic report for a minute or so. ‘And Mac is sure about this, is he?’

‘Yes, he is.’

Carter held her gaze as he asked, ‘Can we trust him?’

‘Him, I don’t know yet,’ said Phillips, honestly. ‘But from what I’ve seen of his work so far – and based on his background up to this point – I think his expertise is right up there, sir. Evans was good, but this guy’s on another level.’

‘You’ve been very quiet, Jonesy,’ said Carter. ‘Where’s your head at with all this?’

Jones reached forward and placed the evidence bag on the desk before returning to his seat. ‘Well, based on Mac’s take on the forensics and this Real Firestarter’s crusade to prove Pearson’s innocence, I agree with the guv; I think it’s time to take another look at Pearson’s case.’

Carter exhaled sharply as he sat forward, linking his fingers together, his elbows resting on the desk. ‘Well, as much as we can’t let an innocent man rot in prison any longer than necessary, we also only get one chance at this. So we need to tread very, very carefully. If Mac’s conclusions are correct and the blood samples were planted by Fox, then it’s up to us to prove it. If we can find the evidence to corroborate your theory, then I’ll personally deliver it to the PCC myself. But there can be no doubt, nothing at all.’

Phillips felt her pulse quicken. She could hardly believe what she was hearing.
