Carterâs eyes widened as he stared down at the folder, which was now on his desk. âAs in planted?â
âPotentially yes,â said Phillips. âAnd Iâm afraid it gets worse.â
âWhy doesnât that surprise me?â
âThe sample in question â essentially the nail in the coffin for Pearson â was found six days after the fire, by a junior forensic scientist and the SIO leading the investigation.â
Carter closed his eyes for a moment before sighing as he opened them again. âAnd let me guess, the SIO was Fox?â
âYes, sir.â
âOh shit,â he muttered. âShit. Shit. Shit.â
âI really think itâs time to take a proper look at the Pearson case, sir.â
Carter held her gaze for a few seconds before passing across a clear evidence bag. âThis arrived about an hour ago in the post. I bagged it as soon as I realised what it was.â
Phillips turned the bag round in her hands as she examined the contents.
Carter continued, âItâs another note from our guy, plus a printout of a newspaper story from the day Pearson was convicted.â
âPearson is innocent.â Phillips began reading the note aloud. âHe was set up by senior cops now hiding in plain sight, and I intend to prove it. You havenât heard the last from me. The Real Firestarter.â Next, she read the headline out loud. âCop Killer Firestarter Jailed for Life.â
âThankfully there was no video this time round,â added Carter.
âSo what do we do, sir?â Phillips asked as she handed the bag to Jones so he could take a closer look for himself.
The room fell silent as Carter scanned the forensic report for a minute or so. âAnd Mac is sure about this, is he?â
âYes, he is.â
Carter held her gaze as he asked, âCan we trust him?â
âHim, I donât know yet,â said Phillips, honestly. âBut from what Iâve seen of his work so far â and based on his background up to this point â I think his expertise is right up there, sir. Evans was good, but this guyâs on another level.â
âYouâve been very quiet, Jonesy,â said Carter. âWhereâs your head at with all this?â
Jones reached forward and placed the evidence bag on the desk before returning to his seat. âWell, based on Macâs take on the forensics and this Real Firestarterâs crusade to prove Pearsonâs innocence, I agree with the guv; I think itâs time to take another look at Pearsonâs case.â
Carter exhaled sharply as he sat forward, linking his fingers together, his elbows resting on the desk. âWell, as much as we canât let an innocent man rot in prison any longer than necessary, we also only get one chance at this. So we need to tread very, very carefully. If Macâs conclusions are correct and the blood samples were planted by Fox, then itâs up to us to prove it. If we can find the evidence to corroborate your theory, then Iâll personally deliver it to the PCC myself. But there can be no doubt, nothing at all.â
Phillips felt her pulse quicken. She could hardly believe what she was hearing.
